Senior Manager, Corporate Development and Sustainability

Responsible for managing a sustainable business portfolio. Collaborates with key executives and managers in identifying sustainable opportunities / improvements and supports them in advancing sustainable innovation that will have a significant impact on the company’s performance. Develops strategic alliances and collaborations with customers, peers, governments, suppliers, etc. to advance the company’s sustainable growth agenda. Responsible for enterprise-wide sustainability integration programs to build sustainability capacity and foster a culture of sustainability innovation and practices. This role will liaise with a wide variety of functional leaders within CN in order to understand their on-going sustainable business needs and challenges, and lend a diverse skillset of planning, analytics, strategic outlook and facilitation. The incumbent will be a resourceful person in providing CN with continuous access to sustainable innovative practices, concepts and ideas and will play a key role in envisioning the future of the railroad industry. This position plays a critical role across the organization by identifying and implementing sustainability initiatives and projects that will advance CN’s ability to continually improve and do business in transformative ways.


Major Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with functional leaders, develop, recommend and scale sustainability innovations that address CN’s risks, and enhance CN’s long-term growth and efficiencies.

  • Lead a range of activities from identifying value creation opportunities to managing projects and business solution implementation (such as alternative fuels strategy, lifecycle of materials/circular strategies) in a way that will position CN as a sustainable and innovative company in the transportation and logistics industry.

  • Provide leadership and support in the planning, facilitation, designing, due diligence and implementation of sustainable strategic business objectives, and sustainability intelligence, trend analysis and reporting; monitor long-term sustainability trends, risks, impacts and opportunities to identify potential improvements.

  • Conduct scenario planning to inform sustainability innovation priorities and strategies; develop sustainability pricing models to assess risks and opportunities.

  • Establish and maintain detailed intelligence on current markets for CN related to sustainability, including competitor positioning and strategy, and industry best practices and trends in sustainability.

  • Develop sustainability tests and pilot projects to prove new sustainable business models and value propositions. Recommend, test and scale emerging successful sustainability and clean technologies, applications and services.

  • Identify and secure opportunities for internal and external financing of sustainability innovations, projects and technologies.

  • Manage the Sustainability Innovation Captial Fund, including promotion, due diligence, selection and progress tracking and reporting of projects. (ie, yard and facility projects including energy efficient lighting, HVAC, air compressors etc).

  • Manage an ongoing best practice employee engagement program to embed sustainability and support broad culture change efforts to motivate employees, realize cost avoidance/savings and support the corporate strategy.

  • Manage a multi-faceted education, training and capacity building program that ensures all employees are knowledgeable about sustainability and understand how it relates to their function and role.

  • Initiate, recommend and manage collaborations with key external partners such as suppliers, customers, associations, peers, start-ups, research institutes, academia, Aboriginal groups, NGOs and governments, to co-design and implement sustainable innovations.

  • Responsible for managing staff and consultants and for supporting the design and execution of a team management and matrix model across the organization.


Skills / Functional Knowledge:

· Ability to lead cross-functional teams and provide project management expertise, and to manage multiple complex projects at once

· High degree of interpersonal and communication proficiency, including written, verbal and presentation skills; bilingual is strongly preferred

· Ability to shape and drive strategic agendas, inclusive of strategic visioning, expert data synthesis, and high-profile communications (compelling, high impact storyteller)

· Excellent analytical skills; ability to create detailed models and to synthesize large amounts of data into actionable business insights

· Strong business acumen and understanding of various business disciplines (finance, operations, technical, administrative) and their sustainability dimensions; knowledge of the transportation industry is a plus

· Leadership through influence and able to work well in teams and matrix type structure

· Keen business judgement. Capable of understanding the big picture and strategic context

· Must have a strong intellectual curiosity, with a passion for problem-solving: creative, comfortable with ambiguity and willing to challenge traditional thought or historical assumptions and conventions

· Project management, strategy development and execution skills

· Change management skills and a strong grasp of organizational culture change strategies

· Knowledge of sustainability integration, employee engagement and capacity building best practices

· Skills in risk management and resiliency planning and adaptation, including risk identification, scenario planning, mapping and analysis; knowledge of strategies to address risks

· Skills in business planning, budget management, business casing, forecasting, and venture finance

· Knowledge of clean technologies, technology development and technology acquisition strategies

· Government, Aboriginal, industry, supplier and stakeholder relations skills

· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and sustainability information systems and virtual collaboration tools


Education / Certification / Experience:

· University degree in business, sustainability management or equivalent (master level preferred)

· A minimum of 10 years of experience in management consulting and corporate strategy, corporate development or related fields with strong expertise in performing market and strategic analysis

· 5 or more years experience in the field of sustainability

· Demonstrated success and experience in facilitating and influencing senior leaders on strategy and matters of significance in a change management context

· Previous management experience with a track record of coaching and developing people

· Experience embedding sustainability in organizational culture and linking sustainability to financial performance

· Experience proposing, initiating and managing cross-functional internal and external partnerships and collaborations and building strong, mutually beneficial stakeholder relationships

· Experience initiating and executing innovation processes, including business casing, venture financing, partnering, testing, prototyping and scaling

· A mix of government relations, marketing and sales, public affairs, communications, operations, facilities, community relations, human resources, procurement, risk management, finance, accounting and investor relations experience is desirable

· Experience in government and non-profit sectors is desirable
